The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), based in the United States, is the leading global organisation funding research into a cure for, and treatment and prevention of, type 1 diabetes (T1D). In addition to funding a wide range of research worldwide, the JDRF regularly sponsors research-related education programmes.

The Conference Grants are awarded for proposals solicited from those in need of financial support in order to run workshops, scientific meetings and conferences relevant to the JDRF's mission. Activities can be located anywhere in the world, and preference will be given to those which address areas of particular importance to JDRF's research priorities, including, but not limited to:

• Beta Cell Replacement: A beta cell replacement product capable of delivering insulin independence for at least 1 year with no chronic immunosuppression therapy.
• Beta Cell Regeneration and Survival: Drugs or biologics that promote the survival, health, and function of beta cells for all stages (at-risk, new onset, established) of T1D. Drugs or biologics that restore functional beta cells to achieve insulin independence in established T1D.
• Beta Cell Autoantigen-Specific Immune Therapies: Vaccines, drugs or biologics that induce or restore durable beta cell-specific immune tolerance; preventing disease progression in people at risk or in the earliest stages of T1D and preserving residual and regenerated beta cells after disease onset and in established T1D.
• Prevention of Type 1 Diabetes: Prevention of onset of beta cell-specific autoimmunity or symptomatic disease in individuals at-risk of developing T1D.
• Artificial Pancreas Device Systems: Artificial pancreas systems with increasing automation that improve/restore glucose regulation with significant reduction in HbA1c, significant reduction in hypoglycemia, and improved quality of life.
• Glucose Modulating Agents: Drug based approaches that improve/restore glucose regulation with significant reduction in HbA1c, significant reduction in hypoglycemia, and improved quality of life.
• Diabetic Kidney and Eye Complications Therapies: Agents that prevent, arrest and reverse diabetic kidney and diabetic eye disease.

Restrictions

This funding is not intended to provide support for an individual to attend a conference or equivalent.

Terms and Conditions

Applications will be assessed according to the requirements of the JDRF mission, and with reference to the following questions:

• How does the meeting/conference relate to JDRF goals?
• What is the format and agenda?
• What is the need for the meeting/conference?
• What is the timeliness of the meeting/conference?
• What are the qualifications of the organisers and proposed participants?
• What is the past performance of the meeting/conference (when applicable)?
• How appropriate is the meeting site?
• How appropriate is the budget?

Complimentary registration for a designated member of JDRF staff, or JDRF guests, may be required for JDRF sponsorship of a meeting. JDRF sponsorship must be ackowledged in all publicity and in the program for the meeting and any proceedings or publications resulting from the meeting. Copies of proceedings or publications resulting from the meeting must be provided to JDRF. In addition, the applicant is required to provide a brief report, written in lay terms, after the meeting for posting on the JDRF website.

Application Procedure

Applications are accepted throughout the year, and should be submitted between three and six months prior to the intended start date of proposed activities. 

In addition to completing the application form, applications for less than EUR 5,000 should provide a letter of intent from a suitable figure within the host organisation, accompanied by a draft agenda and budget.

Otherwise, applications must be accompanied by:

Scientific Abstract: Provide a scientific abstract for the conference (not to exceed one page).

Lay Abstract: Provide a lay abstract that explains the scientific abstract to persons with a nontechnical background (not to exceed one page).

Meeting Organisers: Provide a list of the meeting organizers followed by a biographical shetch of each (limited to three pages for each biographical sketch).

Budget: Provide a budget for the conference, including a breakdown of which agencies will be asked to contribute as well as how much they will be asked to contribute. Justify the budget in detail and explain the request for JDRF funds.

Dissemination of Information: Explain how the conference will be anounced and what publications, if any, will result.

Conference Speakers: List the speakers, their titles, and their affiliations.

Conference Program: Provide the proposed program for the meeting.

JDRF Criteria: Explanation of how the conference meets JDRF funding criteria (not to exceed five pages).
