The Carnegiestiftelsen was founded in 1911 through a donation of USD 230,000 from American industrialist Andrew Carnegie to the Swedish government for the purpose of presenting awards (a gold watch and a sum of money) to those who have risked their lives to save others, beyond what may be considered duty. The Foundation may also award grants in support of scientific research, teaching and education which may be meaningful in saving human lives in connection with accidents. Projects must be directly aimed at lifesaving in connection with accidents.
The Edvard Rosen Foundation also awards grants to reward persons who have shown courage and resourcefulness in saving human lives, but without necessarily having risked their own life while doing so. Grants are also available for activities to promote lifesaving, especially for research, teaching and education in this area.
Previous Successes
Previous recipients aside from heroes include medical research projects, training of a dog for underwater rescue and rescue in burning houses, and a lifeboat for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society. Example of research projects are:
- Thrombocyte dysfunction in severe traumatic brain lesions.
- Prevention of life-threatening cerebral oedemas caused by traumatic head injuries - development of a specific Aqp4-blocker.
- Epidemiology in case of serious trauma.
